Every journey begins with a single step, and for Guide My Trip, that step was a simple frustration during a road trip through the Swedish countryside. Mats Gejnevall, founder of Voxcompanion, found himself constantly wondering about the fascinating places he was passing by, but couldn't safely research them while driving.
The Original Vision
"I was driving through areas rich with history and culture," Mats recalls, "and I kept thinking: there must be an app that can tell me about these places without me having to stop and search manually. That's when the idea for Guide My Trip was born."
Early Development Challenges
The initial concept was straightforward: create a voice-powered travel companion that proactively shares information about nearby points of interest. However, turning this vision into reality presented several challenges:
- Gathering and verifying comprehensive location data from multiple sources
- Creating natural, conversational voice interactions
- Balancing information delivery with user attention and safety
- Ensuring accuracy and relevance of location-based content
- Building a system that works across different regions and languages
Building the Foundation
Development began in early 2023, with Mats assembling a team of experienced developers and travel technology specialists. The team decided to focus on creating a truly conversational experience rather than just another command-based voice assistant.
Data Integration
One of the most significant undertakings was integrating data from multiple sources, including:
- Wikidata for comprehensive place information
- OpenStreetMap for detailed mapping data
- Overture Maps Foundation for standardized location information
- Public tourist offices and government databases
- Licensed providers like Google Places and Tripadvisor
The Beta Testing Phase
By mid-2024, Guide My Trip entered beta testing with real users on actual road trips. The feedback was invaluable, helping the team refine the conversation flow, improve location accuracy, and add features users actually wanted.
Key Learnings
Beta testing revealed several important insights that shaped the final product:
- Users wanted control over how much information they received
- The ability to filter by interest type was essential
- Natural language follow-up questions needed to feel genuinely conversational
- Privacy and local data storage were top concerns for users
EU Co-Funding and Growth
The project received co-funding from the European Union, recognizing its potential to make cultural and historical information more accessible to travelers. This support enabled the team to expand language support and improve the AI capabilities significantly.
Looking Forward
Today, Guide My Trip is available in 30+ languages and continues to evolve. The team is constantly adding new features, improving conversational AI, and expanding the database of interesting places around the world.
What started as a frustration on a Swedish road trip has become a comprehensive travel companion used by explorers worldwide. And this is just the beginning – there's much more to come as we continue to innovate in voice-powered travel technology.
